KCRON

NAME

kcron, kcroninit, kcrondestroy, make-cron-keytab - Utilities getting Kerberos in scheduled jobs

SYNOPSIS

kcron authenticate a non-interactive process

kcroninit creates a cron principal and extracts into a keytab to be used by kcron(1)

kcrondestroy destroys keytab and deletes cron principal created by kcroninit(1)

make-cron-keytab creates principal for group account and extracts into a keytab suitable use by kcron(1)

DESCRIPTION

The kcron utility obtains Kerberos credentials for a process using a keytab previously created by kcroninit(1). The principal used in that keytab is of the form username/cron/host.domainAATTREALM.

The kcroninit utility creates a new principal of the form username/cron/host.domain@REALM and then creates a keytab file that can be used by the kcron(1) utility for authentication. The kcroninit(1) utility must be run under account username and will prompt to authenticate as usernameAATTREALM.

The kcrondestroy utility destroys the kerberos principal of the form username/cron/kcron(1) for authentication.

The make-cron-keytab utility is similar to kcroninit(1). It creates a keytab file for principal of the form groupaccount/cron/host.domain@REALM that can be used by the kcron(1) utility to run authenticated non-interactive processes under a shared or group account. Unlike kcroninit(1) cron principal of the form groupaccount/cron/host.domain@REALM must be first created by Service Desk. The make-cron-keytab(1) utility must be run under account groupaccount and will prompt to authenticate as groupaccount/cron/host.domainAATTREALM using initial password (set by Service Desk).

USAGE

kcron

If no command-line arguments are present, kcron exits after running kinit(1). Otherwise, the arguments are concatenated with space characters between them to form a command which is given to a shell, then kdestroy(1) is executed.

kcron scp examplefile host.example.com:~/

LIMITATIONS

The kcron helper utilities utilize filesystem CAPABILITIES(7) stored as XATTR(7) values on the binaries. The application will not run as expected if your system does not support them.

On modern Linux systems, these are enabled by default. NFS does not support CAPABILITIES(7).

You can review them with GETCAP(8) on /usr/libexec/kcron/*

The kcron helper utilities assume basic kerberos utilities are installed and configured on the system: KRB5.CONF(5) KINIT(1) KDESTROY(1) KADMIN(1)

EXIT STATUS

0

Success.

1

Failure (usage error; configuration error; unexpected error).

2

Failure (missing utilities; insufficient permissions)

NOTE

Recent versions of MIT kerberos are able to automatically kinit against

By default this behavior uses the first principle found within the keytab (KTUTIL(1) slot 1).
