NAME

slapd - Stand-alone LDAP Daemon 

SYNOPSIS

/usr/sbin/slapd [-d debug-level][-f slapd-config-file] [-p port-number][-s syslog-level] [-i] 

DESCRIPTION

Slapdis the stand-alone LDAP daemon. It listens for LDAP connections onport 389, respondingto the LDAP operations it receives over these connections.slapdis typically invoked at boot time, usually out of/etc/rc.local.Upon startup,slapdnormally forks and disassociates itself from the invoking tty.If the-dflag is given and debugging is set to some non-zerovalue,slapdwill not fork and disassociate from the invoking tty.

Slapdcan be configured to provide replicated service for a database withthe help ofslurpd,the standalone LDAP update replication daemon.Seeslurpd(8)for details.

OPTIONS

-d debug-level
Turn on debugging as defined bydebug-level.If this option is specified,slapdwill not fork or disassociate from the invoking terminal. Some generaloperation and status messages are printed for any value of debug-level.debug-level is taken as a bit string, with each bit corresponding to adifferent kind of debugging information. See <ldap.h> for details.
-s syslog-level
This option tellsslapdat what level debugging statements should be logged to thesyslog(8)facility.
-f slapd-config-file
Specifies the slapd configuration file. The default is/etc/slapd.conf.
-p port-number
slapdwill listen on the default LDAP port (389) unless this option is givento override the default.
-i
This option tellsslapdthat it is being run frominetd(8),the Internet protocol daemon.
 

EXAMPLES

To start slapdand have it fork and detach from the terminal and start servingthe LDAP databases defined in the default config file, just type:

        /usr/sbin/slapd

To start slapdwith an alternate configuration file, and turnon voluminous debugging which will be printed on standard error, type:

        /usr/sbin/slapd -f /usr/local/slapd/slapd.conf -d 255
