NAME

ezmlm-moderate - process moderator actions for messageacceptance and rejection

SYNOPSIS

ezmlm-moderate [-mMvV]dir ['/path/program args']

DESCRIPTION

ezmlm-moderatereads a mail message, expecting it to contain an-acceptor -rejectaction request for the mailing list stored indir.

ezmlm-moderateverifies the cookie sent as part of the action request, and if correctattempts to find the corresponding message indir/mod/pending.If the message is found, it is either rejected or posted to the list, depending on the action request.

Posts to the list are handled bypiping the message toezmlm-send(1)located in the ezmlm binary directory, as set at compile time. This isusually the directory that ezmlm-moderate resides in.ezmlm-send(1)is provided withdiras the first argument.

If the optional second argument is given,ezmlm-moderatepipes the message to that program, as executed by sh.No parameters are supplied.

diris passed as an argument toezmlm-send(1),but NOT to any program specified as the optionalezmlm-moderatecommand line argument.

ezmlm-moderatedoes not bother to correctly set sender.ezmlm-send(1)doesn't care, and any other program that might be used can parse thesender from the first line of the message, which is alwaysReturn-Path: <addressAATThost.domain>as build from SENDER originally passed toezmlm-store(1).

If the message is rejected, an optional moderator comment is copied into thenotification to the message sender.A moderator comment is any text in the-rejectrequest found between two lines with ``%%%'' starting in one of the first5 positions of the line. The easiest is to use lines consisting of ``%%%''only. If the characters preceeding the ``%%%'' are found at the beginningof any lines within the comment, the characters are removed. This is toappropriately ignore any ``quote marks'' that you mail program might place atthe beginning of lines in a reply.

Once the message has been successfully accepted or rejected, it is removed fromdir/mod/pendingand a stub is created indir/mod/acceptedordir/mod/rejected,respectively.This is done in order to be able to notify the senders of later moderationrequests about the fate of the message.

A failure to find the message indir/mod/pendingis most often caused by the message already having been accepted or rejectedby another moderator. Therefore,ezmlm-moderatelooks indir/mod/acceptedanddir/mod/rejectedfor a message stub. If found, ezmlm-moderatenotifies the sender in the form of a fatal errorif the fate of the message was different fromthat intended by the current action request.Otherwise, the fate of the message is silently logged.

If the message is not found, it has timed out and the message orthe message stub has been removed byezmlm-clean(1).In this case,ezmlm-moderatenotifies the moderator of the failure, but can no longer discern the fateof the original message. Again, notification is in the form of a fatalerror from qmail.

At the beginning of the message,ezmlm-moderateprints a newMailing-Listfield with the contents ofdir/mailinglist.It rejects the message if there is already aMailing-Listfield.

ezmlm-moderatedoes not distribute bounce messages:if the environment variableSENDERis set, and is either empty or#@[],ezmlm-moderaterejects the message.
